From the Teaching Division. Elizabeth A. Lehfeldt Mar 9, T he AHA Teaching Division staged what might be termed a productive takeover of the Department Chairs Luncheon at the annual meeting in Denver to talk enrollments in history courses. Through lively and instructive small- and large-group discussions, chairs chatted and swapped war stories. But they also revealed creative strategies, programs, and a range of efforts to address the dilemma of declining or stagnant enrollments.
The infectious energy from the lunch inspired the Teaching Division to propose three roundtables for the annual meeting in Washington, DC. The goal of the roundtables was to foster a discussion of enrollments among a larger audience by presenting the ideas our colleagues have been developing all year. The roundtables were clearly a success, with each session drawing at least 50 attendees. Representing a range of institutions—including public and private, research- and teaching-oriented, and four-year and two-year colleges and universities—12 panelists see sidebar offered succinct, engaging presentations.
Just as happened in , discussion proved lively.
Maha Rose offers conventional modalities like yoga, meditation and acupuncture, but among its specialties are the more offbeat and the esoteric: crystal bowl sound baths, tarot card readings, shamanic purification rituals, laughter therapy, spiritual speed dating and fairy school. Krista Porreca, 26, a poet, shopped for crystals for a friend on a recent weekend. After a tarot card reading, Barrie Cohen, 27, described the clarity and wisdom she received.
I see myself coming back. When a customer asked about the magic wands — sticks collected from a Long Island beach and decorated with yarn and glitter — Luke Simon, a founder of Maha Rose, laughed. Simon,
Up to 10 dates in one night from your computer.
Afterwards, you get back to your desk with a stack of 30 business cards and try to decipher your haphazard notes to prioritize how and when to follow up. The problem is, of those 30 business cards, how many contacts are actually valuable and relevant to you e. Those dimensions of relevance or lack thereof take that number from 30 down to only a handful of connections that you want to invest in building a relationship with.
What if there was a way to know which attendees at a conference were most relevant and valuable to you, based on who you hoped to connect with there? What if you kept in touch with that person and sought their advice in the future as your team grows? Would you have spent as much time talking to dozens of randos if you had known who the perfect connections for you were?
Of course not. When our team at Guru started planning Empower , we all had stories like this. Of conferences where we worked really hard to make relevant connections, but lacked the means and bandwidth to do so effectively. So we thought, how can we put that onus on ourselves as the organizers, rather than on the attendees? By organizing people into meaningful cohorts before the conference begins. Commonalities like those dimensions of relevance we mentioned earlier: role, company and team size, industry, business model, who you hope to meet at Empower, etc.

This slightly scary piece of encouragement might leave you with a bit of trepidation. Let me offer a peek inside the program from the view of a faculty member and coach. The group of people who attend EDP are highly motivated, driven, and want to make a positive impact in the world. These individuals are seasoned professionals who are used to delivering results, so we needed to provide the material in a way so that it can be applied to their real world.
MIT provides the theory and reinforces it with the practical. The global life experiences in the class make for such a vibrant community. The week-long program had participants from 27 countries and six continents. The participants listen to a MIT fire hose of information during the day and apply the lessons in teams during the evening by going through simulations with coaching from experienced entrepreneurs. Participants come together on their first day, and we put them through an introduction, then they jump right into entrepreneurial speed dating, pitching ideas, and form teams before they leave that evening.
The balance of the rest of the week consists of the Disciplined Entrepreneurship DE framework, coaching, and ecosystem tours. The program is not for the faint of heart. It truly is a constant fire hose of content. EDP is more than an entrepreneurial mindset as these folks are building out ecosystems, starting companies, and came to the Entrepreneurship Development Program specifically to learn Disciplined Entrepreneurship.
